Emina Bektas Takes Down Mari Osaka in First Round of Qualifying
MIDLAND, Mich. - Emina Bektas knows that when you have a chance to win two matches in a row, a slow start must be avoided at all costs.
On Monday, Bektas did just that as she rode the momentum of a 6-1 first set, to a swift 6-1, 6-4 win over Mari Osaka and moved within one match of the main draw at the 2019 Dow Tennis Classic (DTC).
“I really wanted to focus on getting out to a good start and I think I served really well today,” said Bektas, “It might’ve been the best I’ve ever served so I think that put a lot of pressure on her, and then I was able to find a couple openings in the return game and go from there.”
Bektas’ strong day serving made the difference as she tallied seven aces en route to winning 80% of her first serve points. She was also a perfect 9/9 in service games won during the match.
The American played her collegiate tennis at the University of Michigan where she graduated as the school’s all-time leader in both single and combined victories. Bektas was excited to return to the state that she called home for four years.
“I love being back here,” she added, “Last year was the first time I ever played this tournament, I really loved it and I'm really happy to be back here again. I think that the courts really suit my game, everyone’s so nice, and just with the atmosphere I know everyone loves playing here.
Bektas is taking the tournament a day at a time and will continue her DTC campaign Tuesday where she will take on Ursula Radwanska in the second match of the day and a spot in the main draw on the line.
