2017 DOW TENNIS CLASSIC SINGLES CHAMPION
No. 5 seed and 2015 singles champion Tatjana Maria claimed the 2017 Dow Tennis Classic title for the second time in her career after defeating defending champion Naomi Broady 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-4 on Sunday, February 5th.
In the first set Maria took and early 4-0 lead after converting two crucial break points. Broady was then able to find her game bringing the match back to 4-3, but Maria continued to play aggressive tennis and took the opening set 6-4. In the second set Broady took and early lead but Maria battled back and forced a tiebreak. Maria saved three set points, but Broady closed out the tiebreak to win the set 7-6(6). In the final set both players continued to player decisive tennis. It was ultimately Maria though who would break Broady in the final game of the championship match to win the title with a final score of 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-4.
The two players had only played one previous time in 2015 in Altenkirchen, Germany where Maria defeated Broady 7-6(4), 6-3 in qualifying. Maria is just the fourth person to claim the singles title more than once in their career. The last person to hold the accomplishment was Lucie Hradecka who won the title in 2009 and 2011.
